Dear Families,
In anticipation of Halloween next week, students are feeling very excited and enthusiastic!  I'm already hearing about the unique costumes students will be wearing!  If you would like to send me a picture of your child in his or her costume, please do so via my e-mail: pgill@scdsb.on.ca and I can include it in next week's post!

Character Recognition & Spirit Assembly:
Today at our assembly, we celebrated this month’s character trait:  Cooperation.  Congratulations to Parker and Charlotte for consistently demonstrating this trait in your thoughts, words, and actions! You two are excellent models for 'WORKING TOGETHER TO GET THE JOB DONE!'  Thank you for setting a positive example in and out of the classroom!  Well done you two!!

Math:
This week in math, I introduced the 4 Block Problem Solving Method as way to help students to answer word problems effectively.  I will be providing more problem-based questions for them to answer as this requires multi-steps and helps develop their thinking and application skills.

We continued our learning with telling time, and calculating the area and perimeter of figures.  Check out the 3 problems students solved below.  I did a lot of modelling and providing step by step feedback to get them organized, but as we get more experience with these types of questions, I know the independence level will increase.  Practice makes PROGRESS!

Writing:
This week, I taught the students how to write an autobiography.  I'm really enjoying reading their entry's and learning more about them!  We are working towards including as much detail as possible in our writing so the reader is engaged from the beginning, middle, to the end!  Check out the writing prompt below and ask your child to share some of the things he or she included in the autobiography.

Science:
Last week in Science, we learned about Gravity.  This week, students learned about another type of force called Friction.  We did an in class experiment for this to help us better understand when two surfaces rub together, it causes friction.

Ask your child what types of surfaces we used in our experiment.  What surface caused the MOST FRICTION?  What surface caused the LEAST FRICTION?

The next day, I had students write in their science notebooks and give 2 examples of friction in everyday life.  Check out one entry below :-)

Class Halloween Celebration:
Our class Halloween celebration will also take place on Wednesday during period 5 (1:40-2:30 p.m).  During this time, we will enjoy some healthy treats together and talk about the much anticipated evening of trick or treating!  Please note that we are encouraging that the treats be a healthy option for students, for example, fruit, veggies, crackers and cheese, etc.  If you wish to contribute an item, please do so!  We have 21 students in our class.

Thank you so much for the thoughtful candle holder and beautiful hand written message you gave me earlier this week.  It brightened my day and I'm so grateful for your time, efforts, and kindness, Emma!

Mindfulness:
Halloween is just around the corner!  Watch this interactive and important video to help your child think about and take action to be SAFE when he or she is in the neighbourhood.  You may wish to emphasize these safety tips with your child :)
