Dear Families,
First off, I would like to say thank you to all the students and their parents for taking the time to visit our Classroom Blog each week!  It is an opportunity to listen, learn, see, and celebrate what's happening in our Learning Community!  I'm encouraging you to continue to do so as your child is working extremely hard to improve his or her achievement academically, socially and behaviourally to put in their personal best to help them REACH FOR THE TOP!

Language:
As shared in last week's post, students worked on comparing and contrasting the similarities and differences of a child's experience at Nottawa vs. A Residential School.  We did a whole class discussion with this and wrote down some ideas on a sticky note to contribute to our large Venn Diagram (using hoola hoops).  After this lesson, students went to their desks and completed their very own Venn Diagram.  Ask your child, what some of his or her ideas (statements) were :)  These will come home next week!

Math:
This week our focus in math was on reviewing telling time to the hour, half hour, and quarter hour.  These were expectations from grade 1-2, but it was important to go over these concepts as students in grade 3 are now expected to tell time to the five minutes
(e.g., 10:35 a.m. or 6:55 p.m.) and to recognize the passage of time (elapsed time) such as how many minutes do we have for first break (10:40 – 11:20 a.m.)?

To support your child further in this math unit, please ask them the following questions:

a)     What time do you eat breakfast, lunch and dinner?
b)     What is your bedtime?  When do you get up for school?  How many hours do you get to sleep each night?
c)     Share a special time in your day?  When do you start that activity? When do you stop that activity?  How long was this activity?
d)  The time is 10:45 a.m.  What time will it be in 25 minutes?

Next week, our focus will be on measuring how time passes also known as elapsed time (the passage of time).  This can be a tricky concept, but we will be doing lots of practice in class and if you wish, do so at home too.  Please see picture below for an example of what we will be working on in class.  Refer to question #2!

Thank you to Coleton for bringing in an analogue clock from home to share in class to help us tell time!  I appreciate you connecting your school learning at home!!

Spirit Day & Character Recognition Assembly:
Friendly reminder about our Cooperation assembly taking place next Friday October 26th at 1:40 p.m.  All families are welcome to attend.  I will ensure I give notice to the parents whose child is receiving an award.  We are honouring and recognizing all students from K-8 for Cooperation.  I'll be sure to reveal our recipients in next week's post, stay tuned :)

Picture Orders:
A friendly reminder that picture order forms are due on Thursday October 25th.  Please send in your child's agenda bag.  Thank you.

Sonja & Lyric:
In science this week, we learned about magnetism and how this force helps attract and repel objects.  Thank you Sonja and Lyric for bringing in magnets from home to contribute to our learning!  We will take a closer look at these in our next science class!  I know students will enjoy experimenting with these!

Georgian Humane Society Fundraiser:
Thank you boys and girls (Alex, Lyric, Shasta, and Charlotte) for your generous donations for the Georgian Humane Society Fundraiser that we're doing at school!  Your contributions are valued and we appreciate it!  If you wish to donate, please do so by the 31st.

Harrison:
Thank you Harrison for helping our classroom get into the Halloween spirit!  I appreciate you bringing in this blowup to help decorate!  The kids and I love it :-)

Adalyn:
Congratulations Adalyn on your running achievement at the Run Blue Mountains event last weekend.  Your 3rd place finish for a 1K run is amazing!!  Way to go!

Mindfulness:
A pep talk about teamwork and leadership!  What traits do you need to be an effective leader?  Remember to never give up even when things get difficult!  Try!  TRY!  TRY!

Growth Mindset:

“I am NOT AFRAID of a CHALLENGE!”

Namaste,
Ms. Gill
