Dear Families,
I hope you have an enjoyable Family LONG Weekend!  It will be amazing to have that ‘extra’ day off on Monday to spend quality time with all your loved ones.  I do my best to appreciate and value my time off with those that I care about.

Here are some of the activities that I hope to get up to with my family and friends - go to the city, attend a birthday bash, hike through the woods, and get in as much relaxation as possible.  Being a big sports fan, I’ll also be tuning into the NBA All-Star weekend.  Wishing you all a tremendous weekend too with your family!

Valentines Day:
Yesterday, we celebrated Valentine’s Day with our class community along with the rest of the primary division at the Bowling Alley!  Thank you families who took the time and energy out of your busy schedules to purchase cards, gift bags, and yummy treats for all of US to enjoy!  I was deeply touched by the gifts I received too, it meant a lot to me!  I will cherish them!

Can you tell HOW much FUN we truly had!?  It was an absolute blast!  Thank you to the primary division for organizing this event for the children, it was a memorable experience :) It was heart-warming to watch your child give and receive Valentines with such gratitude.

Gratitude:
I am so moved by my students sharing their love and kindness with me each day they arrive with an open heart and open mind.  We have had such a meaningful start to the new year together.  Like many celebrations throughout the year (e.g., Thanksgiving, Earth Day), I have shared with my students that Valentines Day is something that we must acknowledge and celebrate every day.  It is the right time anytime to spread OUR ... love, joy, kindness, and peace.

A special thank you to Harrison for taking initiative to write this important message (see below) for his peers and me to enjoy.  You will notice that many students took time to write their own growth mindsets on their Valentine bags which was amazing!!

"Valentines Day is not just about chocolates and treats.  It is about loving what you have, but not just on Valentines Day, but EVERYDAY!  Valentines Day is a very special day to spend time with your loved ones and family.  This year, it is celebrated on Thurs. Feb. 14th.  February is also known for Black History.  It celebrates all the African American and Canadians who helped end segregation.  Let's celebrate LOVE today ...and everyday!!"

Spirit of Giving:
In the spirit of gratitude, I came across this inspirational story about a muslim man who is making a difference in the lives of those who are in need.  It connects well with our learning about Homelessness and supporting the Home Horizon Program.  My class enjoyed this very much!  Have a listen and be amazed at how a generous act of kindness can change someone's life for the better ...FOR GOOD!

Math:
Our learning this week focused on interpreting and drawing conclusions from data presented in charts, tables, and graphs.  Please refer to the two questions posted below (pictures) and ask your child what his or her strategy was to answer the questions.  These were challenging for some of us, so I am encouraging a review of these concepts to reinforce what is being taught.

A Data Management review sheet was sent home on Wednesday.  Please go over these expectations with your child.  He or she may wish to complete the practice questions that came home as well to help prepare for the assessment next week!  Thanks so much!

Language:
Who is Rosa Parks?  Before you see the video with your child, check if he or she can give you some background knowledge of this important civil rights activist in their own words.  I think you will be delighted by how much they've learned about Mrs. Parks!

"The integrity, the dignity, the quiet strength of Rosa Parks turned her no ...
into a YES FOR CHANGE!"

Alex:
Today, Alex came to school very enthusiastic and excited to share something he did at home that directly connects to our Black History learning.  Students and I were amazed by his initiative and research skills to write and teach us about 4 very inspiring African Americans - Harriet Tubman, Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, and Fredick Douglass!!

At the end of his sharing, Alex also told us about a story he found online called, "Hey Black Child."  See below!  We then listened to it in class.  AMAZING!  It really helps reinforce what we've been learning all year long - YOU CAN BE THE BEST YOU CAN BE ... IF YOU - TRY, TRY, TRY!

Thank you Alex for going above and beyond to teach US!  Your determination to learn and grow is inspiring!!  I'm so happy you're becoming passionate about Black History as much as I am!

Coleton:
Earlier this week, Coleton came to school with a NEW $10.00 with Viola Desmond on it.  This inspirational civil rights activist has meant a lot to Canadians as she helped end segregation and stood up for equal rights for ALL.  Thank you Coleton for sharing your knowledge and enthusiasm with us!!  We will now always honour Viola before we use the $10 bill.

Science:
Our new unit will focus on Strong & Stable Structures.  Some of the expectations that we will learn about are as follows:
  • define a structure as a supporting framework with a definite size, shape, and purpose that holds a load
  • identify structures in the natural environment (e.g., tree, bees' nest/hive) and in the built environment (e..g., a totem pole, fence, CN tower)
  • identify the strength of a structure as its ability to support a load
  • identify the stability of a structure as its ability to maintain balance and stay fixed in one spot
Students will have the opportunity to build and design various structures in their
S.T.E.A.M. TEAMS!

Report Cards:
This evening, your child will have brought home their Term 1 report card.  I thoroughly enjoy writing these as it gives me the opportunity to reflect and think about all the wonderful achievements your child has attained!  We all have next steps, including ME, and I have stressed to the children that it is important to remember to celebrate ALL their achievements (strengths & next steps) and that we always strive to reach our individual potential.

Goal setting is another important aspect of our learning and I had students think about a star (their strength) and arrow (next steps) to continue building upon their achievement.  They have brought home this activity with the report card, enjoy reading these!

One more term left, I can't believe I'm writing this!!  Time flies when you're having FUN!!

Mindfulness:
The NBA celebrates Black History Month.  Please listen and enjoy Doc Rivers thoughts paying tribute to the NBA's first black coach - Bill Russell.  One of the most powerful words from this video for me was:  "Red didn't look at him as a black man, but as a man who could coach!"

I believe we have come a long way from the injustices of the past.  Today, we see each other not by the colour of our skin, but by the goodness in our hearts.  May we continue moving forward in this positive direction and ensure we keep it this way!!

Growth Mindset:
"It's not about the finish line that counts.  It's about having the COURAGE to start."
- Charlotte
