Dear Families,
I would like to wish you all a Happy Easter with your family and friends!  As many are aware, it is Good Friday tomorrow (no school) and Easter Monday (no school), so students will be back to school on Tuesday.  Some have shared with me their favourite Easter traditions that they partake in with you. Enjoy these heartwarming activities with your child and I look forward to hearing all about them next week!

Math:
This week, I gave the students a very challenging math problem that required multi-steps.  See slide below.  The focus was to use the 4-Block Problem Solving Method to organize their thinking.  In grade 3, students are expected to multiply (up to 7x7) and divide (up to the 7x table) numbers using a variety of strategies.  They are becoming quite comfortable with this.

I have encouraged students to practice their times tables using mental math so these facts become automatic.  When I was younger, my brother and I had to practice multiplication over and over and over again during our summers.  At the time I didn't really enjoy it, but as I got older, I became grateful for this because it helped me immensely moving forward in life.

Language:
Students have been working very hard in class and at home on their google slides presentation on "How to Be the BEST ME!"  Thank you families for all your input and support in this meaningful assignment.  I am very pleased with their pieces so far and I have every confidence, we will be well prepared to share these with all Nottawa families who attend next week's publication fair!  I'm encouraging students to use some time over the Easter weekend to work on these too.

Science:
We had another exciting science lesson this week.  We learned all about how and why triangles are the strongest shapes to use to build with.  Ask your child what the 3'S stand for in a triangle (HINT: support, stabilize, stiffen).  Check out the video below!

After watching the video, students worked in their STEAM TEAMS to build a strong and stable structure using toothpicks and plasticine.  They had a blast with this!  The objective was to incorporate triangles into their models so their toothpick structure could hold a load :)

Optimism Assembly:
Our next character recognition awards assembly will take place next week on Fri. Apr. 26th during period 5 from 1:45 - 2:30 p.m.  All families are welcome to attend!  We look forward to seeing Mrs. Shaw's class lead this assembly.

It is also NEON COLOUR DAY on the 26th.  So wear your brightest clothing from head to toe, everyone!!

Publication Fair:
A note came home about this upcoming exciting event!  You won't want to miss out on this opportunity to come celebrate LITERACY at our school.  We are delighted to also have Canadian author Sigmund Brouwer join us from 5:00 - 6:00 p.m. in the gym.

Would you like to participate in our book swap?  Please send in 1 gently used book by April 22nd.  Book swap tables will be set up the night of the publication fair.

Fun Fair:
Our event is scheduled for Thurs. May 30th from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. and features a wide variety of inflatables, games, a silent auction, bake sale, sweete shoppe, and many more food vendors!  It's always a wonderful turn out and shows just how amazing our school is!

Coleton & Ryan:
Thank you to Coleton and Ryan for the wonderful Easter gifts!  We really appreciate the sweet treat (maple syrup) and the sea shells!  We will keep these items close to our hearts and always remember your thoughtfulness.  You amaze and delight us all with your acts of kindness.

Guided Meditation Night:
Thank you school council for having my Ma lead another guided meditation session.  She always enjoys interacting with our students and their parents.  We had a lovely time together sharing our collective energies in a relaxing and soothing way!  Hopefully we can do another one in May!

Mindfulness:
Before the students left for their Easter long weekend, we had a discussion about how Easter is more than receiving chocolate and gifts ... it's about spending time with our families and being grateful for what we have ... happiness, health, and being able to create heart warming memories together.  This Easter, make it one to remember by sharing your gratitude affirmations :-)

Happy Earth Day on Monday!!  Thanks Sonja for sharing your love for our Earth!
