Dear Families,
It's another rainy Friday here in Nottawa.  Luckily, we were able to get outside for one of the fitness breaks :)  Can you believe in less than a week, we'll be into the month of May?  It felt like April zipped by!  As always, lots of learning happening in our classroom.  Check below, see for yourself :)

Enjoy another weekend with your loved ones!  I'm looking forward to this :)

My boyfriend Dan and his adorable nephew Antonio!
Character Recognition Assembly:
Today during period 5, we had an assembly to celebrate all the students who have demonstrated OPTIMISM - "We believe we can do it!"  Congratulations to Connor, Darcie and Shasta for always believing in themselves and their abilities to persevere even through challenging tasks. Your determination and dedication to getting the job done is valued.  Well done!

Thank you to ALL the staff and students who dressed up in NEON and BRIGHT colours today!  Always let your LIGHT SHINE :-)

Swimming:
It was our last week of swimming.  I am so proud of everyone for displaying their personal best in their behaviour and representing our school family proudly!  Congratulations to everyone for completing the 'Swim to Survive' program.

Math:
Thank you to the families who consistently take the time to support their child’s learning in ALL subject areas, but in particular with their math by reading the math letters that come home.  It is making a difference!  As you’re aware, we are learning about 2-D & 3-D geometry.  To get this unit started, our focus has been on identifying angles.  Ask your child the names of the 3 types of angles we're learning about.

Click on the links below to discuss the questions on the math slides we worked on this week!

Publication Fair:
Thank you to everyone for attending our first literacy fair at Nottawa!  It was a fabulous turnout and the ENERGY around the school was so positive!  Thank you to Mrs. Garvan for initiating, organizing, facilitating this!  Without you, this event wouldn't have been possible.  You're a true Nighthawk ROCK STAR!

I appreciate all the hard work MY students put into their publication assignment - "The Best Me!"  Parents, thank you for going the extra mile for printing out the slides in colour and even binding them!  They look very impressive and turned out terrific!

Oral Presentations:
In the next week or two, students will be doing an oral presentation for the class to share their "Kindness" projects.  I am excited about this as it is a consolidation of a lot of what I've been teaching the kids throughout the school year :)  Setting a growth mindset in our thoughts, words, and actions.  I strongly believe this is what can and will continue to make our planet a bright and beautiful one!

Please use the criteria (see picture below) that was sent home yesterday to review and practice what I will be looking for when your child presents.  Each child will give and receive feedback based on the criteria.  Students signed up for a date, please take note of this.

Earth Day:
Our annual earth week initiatives will take place the second week of May.  Thank you to Mr. Plater and his students for organizing this for us.  We're looking forward to making our contributions to help our Mother Earth!

Music Mania (April 30th):
I am excited to share with you that my class will be performing 2 songs at this years "Music Mania" Event at Worsley Public School in Wasaga Beach.  This is an honour because usually only our school band and the choir attends this.  But, because our class did such an amazing job performing "The Best Thing About Me is You" and "Love Can Build A Bridge" at the Empathy as well as the Black History assemblies, we have been asked to share these songs at this event.  As a teacher, this will be my first year attending and I am so proud of my students!!  I know we'll do a GREAT JOB again!

On Tues. Apr. 30th, I ask that your child please wear a black top and black bottoms (jeans, pants, tights) on this day just like we did for the Black History Assembly in February (see picture below).

If you do not own black clothing, that is ok, a dark top and dark pants will suffice.  I will provide a colourful bandana for students to complete the outfit.  Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.  It is appreciated!!

Into the Woods (May 2nd):
Next week, we will be attending the "Into the Woods" performance led by Admiral Elementary.  It should a fantastic show!!  Please speak with your child about appropriate behaviour during a live musical.  Admiral has been working so hard on this and it is our time to show them how much we appreciate their time and efforts.

Emma:
Thank you to Emma and her Mom for making a donation of craft items for our STEAM TEAM science challenges!  I really appreciate this and I know the students will too when we utilize these :)

Spirit Wear:
Thank you to ALL the families who purchased Nottawa's spirit wear!  We look amazing in our school colours :-)  I have shared with my students to wear this attire with utmost respect as they step out into the community.  We want to always represent our school with pride and dignity!  Nighthawks ROCK!

Mindfulness:
While plastic thrown into landfills contaminates the soil and groundwater with harmful chemicals and microorganisms, the effects of marine pollution caused by plastic are immeasurable. Just like on land, even in the oceanic areas, the effects of plastic on marine life has started to be felt.  Please take a moment to watch this video and consider minimizing the use of plastic in your daily life.  Together, we can make a difference!

Growth Mindset:

"If you can be anything, BE KIND and BE YOURSELF!" - Connor

Namaste,
Ms. Gill
