Dear Families,
I hope everyone enjoyed their Family Day last weekend!  I'm so happy we recognize and celebrate this.  Family is of utmost importance to me as I am sure it is for you as well!  Please enjoy more family time this weekend :)

PINK SHIRT DAY:
Today was dedicated to promoting and acknowledging Bullying Prevention!  This is an issue that is near and dear to my heart and as your child's teacher, I am reinforcing the importance of creating, building upon, and maintaining happy hearts in and out of our classroom.

Our Community of Learners Agreements help guide us every day - Attentive Listening, Mutual Respect, NO PUT DOWNS, Right to Participate, Right to Pass.  We regularly refer to these agreements as a reminder for us all to treat our peers, friends, and family with kindness, dignity, and respect.  I feel this will help in creating a happy, safe, and caring world.

I believe in all my students and their abilities to reach out to do their part in making a positive difference for our today and tomorrows ... together we can help put an END TO BULLYING!!!

Below I have posted a brief video about how pink shirt day got started.  This gave students an opportunity to learn where it all began and why it is important to acknowledge it every year!

Activity:  Happy to Scarred Hearts:
In our class, I shared an activity to help us create an awareness to the harmful effects of how deeply affected one can be when they are put down and bullied.  I drew a heart on a piece of paper.  Next, we observed the 'Heart' and talked about how it was feeling.  Many replied, “Happy, loved, respected.”

Then, I showed them a crumpled up paper and placed it in front of us.  Finally, we opened up the heart to see what it looked like.  Following this observation, we had a powerful discussion of how once you hurt someone's heart (feelings), you create "wrinkles or scars that remain with that person that are difficult to heal and bring back to its original happy state."

We also discussed the term "Bystander" and what it means.  A bystander(s) is a person or group of people who see bullying happening yet don't do anything to help.  In other words, they witness the bullying and walk away which ultimately continues and promotes this unkind cycle.

My class is a beautiful, loving community of learners and it is our hope we will continue to be so and encourage each other as well as other students in our school about the importance of NO PUT DOWNS!

As a class, we made a plan and wrote our own pledges to help End Bullying!!  Ask your child to share his or her message with you.  They brought their 'heart messages' home today.

Here are some of the boys and girls responses!  Look at ALL the powerful thoughts!  We talked about the importance of now putting our thoughts into our words, and more importantly into OUR ACTIONS.  It is OUR actions which can ultimately help put a stop to bullying.

Character Recognition Assembly:
Today, we had a school-wide Character Recognition assembly celebrating February's character trait which is Inclusiveness - "We always include others in our play, we never send people away."

I selected two students for this award, but could have easily picked numerous others as the children in my classroom have been working hard at being inclusive, most have schema (background knowledge) for not being included, so everyone is doing their personal best to ensure others feel welcome!

Congratulations to Becca and Jimi for receiving the Inclusiveness award!  Well done you two!  I know your families are so proud of you too just as much as I am :)

Swim-To-Survive Program:
On Monday, your child will bring home a field trip form in their agenda bag.  All grade 3 students will partake in a swim to survive program.  This is a very meaningful experience as students get to learn and build upon their swimming skills in a fun way!

Here are the dates!  Please mark them down into your calendars :)

April 4th, 11th, 18th, 25th

Learning About Different Lines:
One of our brain breakfast math questions this week focused on different types of lines.  Students learned about the differences between parallel, perpendicular, and intersecting lines.  See if your child can tell the properties of each before viewing the video together.

Math:
Our new math unit for the next week or so will focus on Probability.  I hope you had a chance to review the note that came home earlier this week.  Try some of the at home activities.  It's a fun unit as students will play a variety of probability games using dice and spinners!  Check out the video below to learn more about this concept from an engaging mathematician!

Language:
This week, students learned about the great Martin Luther King Jr. (American) as well as Lincoln Alexander (the first African Canadian member of Parliament) who helped bring about positive change so we can now live with equality!  We owe our utmost gratitude to these individuals as they helped shape our world into one that doesn't judge people by the colour of their skin.

Black History Assembly:
Can you believe it!?  Our black history assembly is just around the corner!  The students are working so hard in class and at home to prepare for this special presentation (Thurs. Feb. 28th @ 9:15 a.m.) and we can't wait to share this heart-soaring event with you all!

I hope you've marked it down into your busy calendars as you won't want to miss out on this experience.  Please have your child wear a black top and black bottoms for this.  We want to strive to look, act, and feel like a community of learners!  Your support in this matter is appreciated.  See you next week!

Coleton:
Thank you Coleton for bringing in an article about a local supporter of educating our community about the importance of Black History.  I am excited to announce that Carolyn Wilson will be joining us at the assembly and offer our school a few words as well!  She has made significant contributions in our area to help others feel safe, valued, and free of judgement.  Ms. Wilson is a busy lady with her volunteering, but she is taking time out of her day to come celebrate EQUALITY us.

Mindfulness:
I've shared these heritage minute videos like the one below throughout the month of February to give students images and words of what some of the changes that have come as a result of the courage and fight by civil rights activists like Harriet Tubman, Rosa Parks, Viola Desmond, etc.  Here is one that focuses on the Underground Railroad in Canada that helped free slaves!

"Free at last!  Free at last!  Thank God Almighty, we're FREE AT LAST!" - Dr. King Jr.

Growth Mindset:
"If you are POSITIVE, our WORLD can be too!" - Sonja

Namaste,
Ms. Gill
