Dear Families,
Another wonderful week of learning both IN and OUT of the classroom.  We were able to go on 2 field trips :)  I've shared with my students how lucky we are at Nottawa to be filled with amazing opportunities to see, explore, and learn in a variety of settings.

Thank you parents for all your contributions by signing/returning permission forms, packing extra snacks, organizing the proper attire (e.g., swim gear), and paying for all these trips.  Hopefully, your child has shared some of their gratitude to YOU in their own special way :)

Just a friendly reminder, it is very important to please sign and return permission forms with payment in a timely manner (due dates are usually written on the forms for you).  This helps in organizing for a trip and so we don't have to make phone calls on the day of to notify parents as you have a lot on your plate to begin with.  We can not take students on a field trip without written consent.  I realize there are a lot of forms coming your way at this time of year, so I will always do my best to give you reminders through the agenda and this blog so you have lots of notice.  Thank you!

Character Trait:
This month's character trait is Respect - "We treat other people the way we want them to treat us."  To get my student's thinking about this trait in their thoughts, words, and actions, I showed them this public service announcement.

In my experience, I have learned that respect is NOT a given, it is EARNED.  Remember, if you give it (respect), YOU GET IT!

Nottawa Earth Week Activities:
As a school wide initiative, we will be helping our community stay GREEN!  Below, I have listed the various activities we will be doing for your reference :)  Please jot these down into your calendars everyone so you too can help encourage your child to participate!

Mon. May 6th:  Boomerang, Litter Less Lunches, and L.O.L ALL WEEK!

Everything that comes in your lunch, goes home, except compost!
L.O.L. means 'lights OUT lunch' during nutrition breaks (which we do regularly in our class)!

Jimi always comes to school with a litter less lunch!  Proud of YOU!

Tues. May 7th:  Walk, Ride, Roll, or Bike to School!

Let's try and save energy and get a little exercise!!!

Wed. May 8th:  Plastic Water Bottle Free Day!

Put those plastic water bottles in the blue bin!
Clean up that reusable bottle we all have sitting in the cupboard and fill it up with some delicious tap water.  You won't find any residual plastic in that water :)

Thurs. May 9th:  Battery Collection!

The Green Team will make sure they don't end up in the landfill!

Fri. May 10th:  Tree Planting & Community Clean-Up!

WEAR GREEN!  Take your class outside and enjoy a picnic lunch and be part of our tree planting
All students and staff are asked to wear green to show our commitment to the environment!

STAY GREEN NOTTAWA!!!

Oral Presentations:
Great job Connor, Cayden, and Parker with presenting your google slides earlier this week with our class.  All three of you did your personal best!  We really enjoyed watching, listening, and learning from your inspirational videos, growth mindsets, and strategies to be the BEST YOU!

Math:
Click on the link below to check out our mini-lesson about angles in designs!  Students are getting quite confident in this area of learning.  Over the weekend, try to find various angles in and outside of your home and have your child identify them!!  We did this in our classroom and on the school yard last week.

Angles in Designs:
Language:
Click on the links below to discuss with your child about the short story and what their answers were from this text :)  We will spend some time next week consolidating and sharing what a level 1- 4 look like so we can continue improving upon our achievement.

Reading:  "Waiting for the Tulips"

Reading Response Questions:

Mother's Day Note:
A note came home earlier this week, we need your help with a mother's day gift!  Please send in a "head shot" (photo) of your child's mother.  We will be using this photo to accompany a card.  The head shot size should preferably match the example that I sent in the note that came home.  This will all make more sense when  you see the card ;)  Please send in the photograph by Tues. May 7th.  Thank you so much for your cooperation in this!

We have started our Mother's Day letters and are enjoying thinking about ways to express our gratitude to our mothers for all their selfless acts of kindness each and everyday!  I am optimistic when you receive and read your child's letter, it will bring tears of joy to your eyes.

Students have an excellent start on these letters.  I am encouraging them to work on these at home too by accessing their google drive accounts.  Your child may wish to personalize their letter with personalized photographs to enhance it!

Music Mania:
Thank you to Angela Girdwood and the staff/students of Worsley Elementary for hosting a fantastic Music Manin 2019!  It's a lot to organization, facilitating, and running such an event for so many students!!  The performances were lovely and all the children shined!

Our school choir performing
I'm especially proud of my students who closed the event with our drumming piece and "Love Can Build a Bridge."  I received a heart warming message from Mrs. Girdwood sharing how great Nottawa performed!

Here is what she emailed me:  "What a way to end the morning!!  That ("Love Can Build A Bridge") is a song I have sang many times.  Very powerful.  Thank you, Nottawa.  I love you!"

Ready to begin our performance :)
Thank you Mrs. Ferris for capturing these photos below, we appreciate it!!

We truly are filled with amazing students who represent themselves with pride and dignity :)  I too love being a Nighthawk!

Into the Woods:
What a wonderful performance put on by Admiral!  Thank you to all the students who dressed up for this event, you all looked wonderful!!  Check US out :-)

The popcorn and water was definitely a refreshing treat!

Pioneer Trip:
On Wed. May 22nd, our grade 3's will be traveling back in time to discover the way the Early Settlers lived during the pioneer days!  We'll visit the pioneer village at the Simcoe County Museum.  We'll tour a log cabin, play the outdoor games that kids played, learn lessons in the pioneer school and we'll even churn some butter!

If you have an updated Criminal Record Check and you would like to join us on this trip as a volunteer, please assume we need you, and fill out the volunteer section of the permission form.  You can pay the volunteer cost of $8.00 along with your child's fee.

We will meet in the portable at 9:00 a.m. on the 22nd and you can ride the bus with us if you like or you can drive separately and we'll meet you there.  Thanks in advance for your help!

Jump Rope for Heart:
On Thursday, we had our annual kick-off assembly for Jump Rope for Heart.  This is a very important and meaningful program to help raise awareness and funds for those who suffer from a heart condition.  Thank you to our very own Mrs. Shaw who is the teacher lead for this.  Your hard work is something we appreciate very much!!

Nottawa has participated in this fundraising for 20+ years and has raised $124,000!
Last year, we raised a total of $3,700!  Isn’t this absolutely amazing!?  I was so moved by this when the presenter shared this fact with us!  This year's school goal is $3,000 and I am optimistic we can not only get there, but even exceed this amount!

Nottawa’s students and families are so empathetic and caring :)  All forms were handed out Wednesday, so you may get fundraising if you CAN!

Becca:
Thank you Becca for the neat dice math game and tissues for your peers and I.  Your thoughtfulness is appreciated!!  Can't wait to try out the multiplication game!

Sonja:
Over the long weekend in April, Sonja and her family traveled to Parry Sound.  She was very excited to make connections to our science learning with structures!  Look what she found :)  Can your child identify what it is.

Thank you Sonja and family for sharing these images with us.  I am always delighted to see when my students connect their school learning with the real world!  Way to go :-)

Mindfulness:
What are some of the ways that you saw in the video that can "help make a change/difference in the world?"  How can you incorporate these in your daily life?  Next week, we will be celebrating earth week at our school.  I'm really excited about this and we will definitely do OUR PART!

Growth Mindset:
