Dear Families,
Wishing you a safe and wonderful long weekend with your family and friends!  I've heard some students going away camping and to their cottage.  Here's to sunshine and blue skies!  I will be spending time in the city watching our national women's soccer team play against Mexico on Saturday, going to the Raptors game on Sunday, and hopefully on Monday, continue to explore other beautiful parts of the city I haven't seen YET!

Language:
This week, we spent time doing a writing task with the following prompt:  Write a paragraph explaining how you would help a new student feel welcome in your school.

Students were asked to brainstorm some ideas prior, and then write down their paragraph.  I thought this was a very meaningful question as it gets the kids to use their schema (background knowledge) and their own experiences to share ways they can be kind and inclusive!  Ask your child what some of his or her ideas were.  We will consolidate this piece of writing next week :-)

Math:
Everyone did a fabulous job on their angles assessment!  I am very proud of their achievement!  We sure know and understand this concept very well.  Now that we have that covered, this week, we spent time learning about and exploring prisms and pyramids!  Students need to know what makes a prism a prism, and what makes a pyramid a pyramid.  Check to see if your child can tell you the difference.

Here is the math activity (see below) the kids worked on in groups.  It was challenging for some, but through perseverance and working as a TEAM they did it!

Science:
Our learning goal for this week focused on - explaining how strength and stability enable a structure to perform a specific function.  We took a look at 4 types of bridges and explored the characteristics of each.  Students enjoyed sharing their experiences about traveling across various bridges in their life such as the Golden Gate Bridge in California, The George Washington Bridge, and other bridges on their travels :-)

Please ask your child the following:

  • What are the four different bridges we learned about?
  • What is the purpose of a bridge?
  • What load does a bridge support?
Your child may wish to re-watch the video below to jog their memory!

Dance:
The students have been buzzing about their dance routines!  Mrs. Johnson has been working hard with the kids and here they are in movin' and groovin' action!  It puts a smile on my face watching them have so much FUN!

Talent Show:
A message from the talent show committe!!  "Talent show now has a date!  On June 26th, we welcome you to Nottawa's Annual Talent Show!  We have prepared for you many musical acts including piano, singing, and dancing!  We also have many videos of students talents and performances on stage.

Spring Event:
Thank you to Ms. Steele and her leadership team for organizing this event for grades 1-6.  We had an absolute blast!  Students participated in a variety of activities which got them running, jumping, thinking, and collaborating as a team.

Congratulations to our class for winning an ICE CREAM party from this event!  We collected the most points :) out of all the primary classes.  Look at the reaction from the kids as it was announced today!!  Love it!

Jump Rope for Heart:
This week, we learned all about the HEART!  We brainstormed ways to keep it happy and healthy!  Students wrote down their ideas and shared them.  These are now posted in the Rotunda for everyone in the school to enjoy!

Ask your child what his or her way was to KEEP the heart fit and healthy!!

Thank you to Mrs. Shaw and her students for organizing and running this event for our students!  We had such a great afternoon exercising our HEARTS!!  Check us OUT!

A special thank you to the families of Emma and Connor who together raised a total of $275.00!  Your contributions are valued and will make a difference in the lives of those with a heart condition.  If you wish to still contribute, please do so!  We will collect the envelopes up until Wed. May 22nd!

EQAO:
The grade 3's, will be writing their EQAO assessment the week of May 27th.  Please take time to read over the parent note and pamphlet that I sent home today in the agenda.  Any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach me via email or the school.

I have shared with my students that this assessment is a celebration of their stars (strengths) and arrows (next steps).  I will ensure to provide a very calm, supportive, and relaxed environment for the kids during this process so everyone feels a sense of ease and comfort.

I am proud of my grade 3's who have worked hard from the beginning of the school year to improve their reading, writing, and multi-step problem solving skills in mathematics.  We have been diligent in class to prepare for this assessment so there should not be any surprises for them.  I have every confidence each child will put in their personal best and that is all I am looking for :)

Field Trip:
On Wed. May 22nd, the grade 3's will be going to the Simcoe County Museum to help reinforce their learning in Social Studies about Pioneer life.  If you have volunteered to join us on this trip, thank you very much!  You may meet us at the regular 9:00 a.m. bell at our portable and then you may decide if you'd like to join us on the bus or drive and meet us there.  Either way is fine :)

Thank you to Shasta for making this wonderful note for me!!  Your thoughts, words, and actions truly touched my heart.  I will cherish this always :)

Mindfulness:
How do you control your thoughts?  Do you find yourself stuck with negative thoughts?  Take some time to rest, relax and BREATHE to help rejuvenate your mind, body, and spirit!  Certainly, this is easier said than done, but with time, patience, and a concerted effort, YOU CAN DO IT!

Growth Mindset:
