Dear Families,
The second week of April has come and gone!  The warmer temps are here and we're all loving IT!  We had another busy, yet productive week at school.  So much engaging, fun, and interactive learning happening in and out of our classroom!  Check it out :)

As many of you may know, I'm a huge sports fan!  Right now, it's playoff season so I'm tuned right into this!  I just wanted to wish our Maple Leafs (hockey) and Toronto Raptors (basketball) the very best of luck as they continue their seasons to bring home a championship!  Did you see the Leafs win last evening?  It was a great game!  Both the Leafs and Raptors play tomorrow evening at 5:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.  Hopefully, you'll be able to tune into these games to cheer them on!

International Day of PINK:
On Wednesday, it was the international day of PINK to celebrate DIVERSITY!  Thank you to all the staff and students who were able to participate in this initiative :)  In class, we have learned that Pink Shirt Day is more than just wearing PINK, we are acknowledging the importance of spreading KINDNESS TO EVERYONE no matter their race, gender, or orientation. We are all different and that is OK!

In class, we did an activity to express our understanding and compassion for those who are affected by bullying.  Students completed a Venn Diagram comparing the similarities and differences between themselves and a bully.  Relating oneself to a bully can be challenging, but they did it and their responses were terrific!  Check out an example below :)

The highlight of this task was when I instructed the kids to write a message of hope to bullies to help them see that they are not bad people, they too have goodness in their hearts, they just need our support to let this aspect of their beings SHINE more often!  We ended our lesson by reinforcing that "EVERY BULLIED CHILD MATTERS!"

Language:
This week, students completed a reading comprehension task that directly linked to their Social Studies learning about Pioneers.  I was very impressed with how most individuals used their schema (background knowledge from Mrs. O's teachings) and the text to support their answers.  They have brought these pieces home with them, so please take some time over the weekend to have a look at these.  I also had them self-assess their responses :)

Math:
We completed our fractions assessment and those will be handed back next week!  I'm proud of my students achievement on these!

The remainder of this week, we worked independently and in pairs to solve word problems using the 4-Block Solving Method.  Students are becoming more comfortable using this method to organize and show their work.  Check out the slide below of the problem I had them solve :-)  We will continue into next week working on more multi-step problem solving questions!

Our next math unit will be on investigating and describing the geometric properties of 2-D and 3-D geometry.  Students will name and compare various polygons, prisms, and pyramids.  A math note will be sent out soon!  Stay tuned :)

Swimming:
We enjoyed another wonderful swimming session this week!  Students are really working hard on their skills and are learning to enjoy this process.  It is more structured than previous years because the emphasis is more so on 'swim to survive' skills rather than free swimming as experienced in grades 1 and 2.  I am proud of the children's focus and determination to build upon their techniques in the pool.

We're halfway through this program, only 2 more weeks left!

Publication Night:
In lieu of the art expo, this year the students of Nottawa will be displaying language activities to promote and celebrate literacy at school!  Students in my class will be preparing a google slides presentation about 'How to Be the Best Me!"  We were inspired by Becca's 'How to be a Better Person' presentation, so I decided to create an assignment that promotes this.  It will be amazing to see what the kids come up with!

The publication night will take place on Wed. Apr. 24th from 4:30 - 6:30 p.m.  Families are welcome to attend and enjoy ALL the published pieces of work throughout the whole school from K-8.

"Into the Woods:"
Last year, our school presented "Annie Jr."  If you were able to attend, you can attest to how amazing the production was!  This year, Admiral Elementary will be presenting their musical 'Into the Woods' for area schools to enjoy.

If you haven't already done so, please sign and return the permission form ASAP along with payment ($8.00) online by Apr. 18th.

We're excited to see this performance at the Gayety Theatre on May 2nd!

A Message from School Council:
